Default a/c trouble

the evaporator/ drier on my 99 XK8 has a major leak, and Im not sure if this is a job I should tackle myself. It is a $100 us part and $300 labor from my mechanic. To do this myself I will need to purchase a vac pump,a/c gauges, freon, and maybe a clip removal tool. I prefer to do my own work and dont mind having more tools in the shop, but this time Im not sure which way to go.
ps I am in SW Florida and it is hot.
Thanks for yor thoughts

Changing the parts is easy. You may also have other leaks. Unless you have experience with this, leave it to a pro, you can do way more damage than the cost at the shop. Getting the moisture out and knowing how to measure the PAG oil and get it back in the right spots can cause major failure if done wrong. A compressor replacement will run about $2000.
