A/C Woes

A/C Woes
I know. A/C is not our favorite subject in the forum. There are very few useful posts on the subject. I guess most members just take it to the pro's to sort out.
I did too and got the typical Jaguar owner's response and quote.
"your compressor is leaking and needs to be replaced, the Jaguar compressor is $@#@# and we can get one original for $$ less plus labor" just mortgage your house to pay us.
Mind you this from a shop I have done business for many years on tires and A/C.
Not me! Thank you.
On the 2000 Xkr the low pressure hose was repaired and the condensor replaced with a new one. O rings were changed.
While getting the fans to work we had partially charged the system to trigger the pressure switch and turn the fans on. It blew cold air and the compressor and clutch engaged. There was a leak on the inboard hose fitting at the compressor. The O-ring was partially showing.
Trying to avoid the uncomfortable working conditions and not having a vacuum pump at my disposal, I figured the pro would handle the matter easily.
Well yesterday I took matters into my own hand and disconnected the inboard hose from the compressor and to my surprise found the same broken O-ring on the fitting. The pro's had not touched the A/C. I replaced the O-ring and purchased a vacuum pump from Harbor freight and proceeded to vacuum dry the system for one hour. -20 psi left overnight. No drop in pressure.
Now I am attempting to recharge with the appropriate refrigerant and the compressor will not engage. Thus no refrigerant is entering the system. Low pressure manifold dial showed 20 psi when I pressed the plunger in the can. Now it is back to zero.
How should I proceed now?

Ok so I went back and fiddled with the connector for the pressure switch.
Also reconnected the vacuum pump to try to get the vacuum below -20.
The air vent of the pump kept putting out copious amounts of water vapor and oil. Same as with the first pump which I returned to H. Freight thinking it was broken. The water vapor turned out to be a loose cap on the R-18 port of the pump.
Tightened it and the pressure shot to -30 and the water vapor stopped.
Left the pump on for 1 hour and then shut the manifold valve and left overnight. This morning -30 was still on the dial, so no leaks. Progress.
Shot some R-134a with some Pag oil in it and the pressure shot up and the compressor clutch engaged.
Pressure when the compressor is off is 60 psi on the low manifold. 15 psi when the compressor is on.
Still no cold air.
What can be going on?
