Not sure what happened. If I manually unlock the shifter then it works fine. Is this an electrical issue?

Since this is a Jaguar I would bet it's electrical.
On every XK8/R I have driven you can hear the solenoid when you step on the brake.

Turn the ignition on but do not start the car. If it is quiet ( Air off- Radio off)
you can hear the solenoid click when you step on the brake pedal.
If you lay your hand on the shift gate, you can actually feel it.

If you hear (of feel) it click.... the problem is right under your hand.
If you do not hear (or feel) the solenoid the problem is between the brake switch and the solenoid. ie. electrical

That path includes a number (4) of modules. the last of which is the Body Processor Module. Which is why I bet on electrical.

Do your stop lights work ??

If it's none of the above and you don't have your interior lights you've blown a fuse in the fuse box on the drivers side facial 15 amp. I shorted a wire in the vanity mirror and lost all of the interior lights and the switch would not let me out of park.
