Car Wizard XK8 Review
Not sure who has seen this YouTube contributor but he recently did a review of the best Jags to seek out if you wanted one.
I was shocked when he said the 97-2002 MY, XK8's were the ones to look for.
This is completely contradictory to everything I know about the XK8 as the 2003 introduced the 4.2L and the 6-speed ZF transmission.
So many issues facing the pre-2003 cars were addressed like cam chain tensioners and guides, etc.
It may be that he sees the earlier model years as the best value because of these issues and some of them can be updated but he made no mention of this in the video.
Anyone else catch it?

The man is a bit of a hack and really owes his whole gig to Tyler Hoover. The ''Car Ninja'' on the other hand is a professional.
PS, for those of you that haven't, Hoovies Garage on youtube will save you a fortune if you have a hankering for, well, just about anything with four wheels and a engine.

Is this the episode where he talks about the "Ford" engine the Jagwar has? I stopped watching at that point.
If you want a giggle find the episode where he mixes up transmission fluid and differential oil in Hoovies Mercedes SLS or the one where Hoovies Ferrari catches fire after the Wizard works his magic on it.

Clearly does not know the model he is "explaining". YouTube has never lacked uninformed opinions.
My bet: Somebody he is connected to needs to sell one in that year range.

........................or the two holes he cut in the tunnel of a Murcielago with a hole saw and covered with fiberglass, to fix what he would have found if he had been bothered to check, or research correctly, however it has great comedy value! Anyway gotta go, Hoovies brought a Maybach, i can only imagine what a pile it will be (and another i will not want after

There's two of them:

He also talks about bad timing chain tensioner design, not realizing he's already holding the latest version in his hand. (6:14 in the second video)

Anybody with a camera or a smart phone can become a Youtube sensation, regardless of their skill, knowledge or ability.
Wouldn't it be great that if in addition to the "like" buttons, there was an "accuracy" button?

If any of you think the Car Wizard is a hack, you haven't been following him or Hoovie's Garage beyond a few of their videos. 'David' is the mechanic most of us could only dream that we had ourselves. Understand he's not a specialist in any one make or model, which is why we/you have more knowledge of Jags. However, I'm willing to bet the breadth of his work and experience makes any of us pale in comparison. Who else here has a large and successful shop stacked with high paying customers and employs other technicians to meet demand? Or has over a quarter-million YouTube subscribers, btw? Please correct me if so.
Sentinelist, I agree with you. He is not a hack. He is just not a Jag specialist. However, despite being uninformed about the finer details, he does do good work if both Hoovie's and his channel are anything to go by. Moreover, if and when something does go wrong, he does acknowledge the issue and fixes it for the customer at no extra charge. Just watch how he owned up to the SLS transmission fluid snafu. By the way, if you pay attention to his videos, he had it right but listened to his tech who was a Mercedes dealer mechanic that said Dave had the fluid wrong. So they put them in according to the Mercedes tech's "expertise".
Yeah, he didn't know he had the latest tensioner in his hand. Yeah, his prices may be a little expensive. But he does do quality work and provides a warranty. I have never found a mechanic like that in my neck of the woods, which is why I do most of my own wrenching.
Besides, can you really call the guy that was able to get a 1982 XJS V-12 back up and running a hack? Remember, this is a car that does not have OBD-II or OBD, that had not run for about a decade IIRC, and that he didn't just throw parts at it or suggest replacing its engine with a GM motor. Yes, there are videos on this in his channel.

Is this guy a friend or relative of yours? Your defense seems a bit motivated. Your car going up for sale soon?

Sorry but anybody who chooses to go on record and "inform those who know less" with statements that are not accurate is just asking to be called a hack. How many cars he's repaired, how big his shop is, how many subscribers he has does not automatically garner respect. That is earned through quality work and evidence of such. The above video contains no such evidence. I have never watched any of his other videos or know of any work he has actually done. So I have to limit my assessment to what I have been presented. And it is weak at best if not actually misleading.

Nah, just a fan of his after seeing how far he's come. Though I did want to highlight what I put in bold above!
But yeah, at first glance he comes across as a simpleton and NOT who you'd go to, but his knowledge and variety and operation is rather impressive. He's pretty dry on the delivery in his own videos that I don't follow, but pretty funny and entertaining in Hoovie's stuff that I do follow. Also worth echoing what was said above about his honesty and making things right the rare times something doesn't go right (he indeed deferred correctly to more SME experience with his ex-Mercedes tech hire on the SLS episode, who was the one that actually made the mixup in oils, not the Wizard), and no more slipups than any other shop it seems. He does seriously quality work and is just a likeable, humble dude.
