CarPlay Screen in Place of GPS
A couple of years ago I purchased one of these cheap units and installed it in my Mitsubishi Montero. It replaced my Pioneer stereo. The sound quality was terrible. On a trip to LA from Palm Springs I was using the GPS. In the middle of the 10 freeway it suddenly said "in 500 feet make a sharp left". which was impossible. A couple of seconds later it said "That's impossible". I later took it out and installed my Pioneer unit back in. Now days, I just use my Waze on my phone which is always accurate and provides updates on traffic.
I bought a Carpuride unit a year ago, and fabricated a bracket to install it in front of the air vents, following John Dee’s “to the garage” youtube videos. The unit is great with regards to working as an apple carplay device. I have 2 issues with it though:
1. the sound quality is pretty rubbish. It’s wired into my cd changer (which is where my previous bluetooth solution was wired, which sounded great).
2. on power-up, it sends a big “whump” through the speakers. I’ve worked around this using a delayed relay to connect, but it was a lot of hassle to fix. Their techical support was next to useless.
Not sure how generalizable my experience is, but sharing it so you can see what kind of things might be challenging. My unit was $160 (amazon lightning deal - usually $199)

I was thinking about a smaller one like this 5.5" one. Thinking it could mount behind the dash after removing the stock one and be pretty clean and basic install. Haven't dug into details too much yet though.

4.8”W x 2.7”H (12.1 x 6.8 cm); 5.5” (13.9 cm)
The one you linked to says 5.89 x 0.42 x 2.95 inches which is the overall dimensions. So an inch wider, and a quarter of an inch taller. Maybe it would be a good fit - you could always order one on Amazon and return it if it doesn't fit.
Here’s what @MonkeyBrain did a few years ago. I’m contemplating the same thing.

The genius part is the 3D printed piece he created, which installs behind the dash, and uses the same mounting holes as the outdated nav unit. This then enables you to install a mounting bracket for the screen in that same spot. The challenge now is finding a unit which has a detachable screen and an extension cord.
This plan uses a Joying audio screen which has mixed reviews. I’ve also sourced a Pioneer item which theoretically could fit the bill.
Pioneer DMH-C5500NEX.
(Cut and paste links to this site aren’t working) Crutchfield has it for $650 and they sell an extension cord and mounting kit. These pieces in conjunction with the 3D printed mounting bracket, should do the job. In theory.
I’m subscribing to this thread so I can see if anyone else has used this Pioneer stereo or attempted to install something similar.
My goal is to remove the outdated nav and cover those spots with a screen which is Apple CarPlay compatible.

Figured out how to include the links to these products.
