Default Center rear view mirror question

Started rattling, it did. It had come loose from its mounting. So my first look at things reveals that the mirror base attaches to a metalic post that, my guess, must be glued to the windshield glass. I can't see if there is any sort of positive latch or other locking mechanism between the mirror base and the post, or if it is just a press fit.

Probably there's a thread or FAQ on this, but I can't seem to locate one.

Questions please:
Press fit or some sort of locking mechanism?
If the former, how hard should I push to press it back on there? I sure don't want to have that post separate itself from the glass.

TIA for any advice.

Mine rattled when I got the car. I've not taken it off but when I tried to, pushing up and down, it wedged in tighter and hasn't rattled since. There is a thread on removal on here someplace but pushing down, in line with the windshield surface, worked for me.

It's in the thread(s) about replacing the autodimming mirror after manufacturer rebuild.

they usually mention: poisonous, fluid, mirror, exchange

I hope this helps AutoRepairMirrorRepair.htm I has worked twice for me. Just use caution when removing and installing the mirror and do not break the clip.
