Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery should not cause the check engine light. The check engine light means there is a fault somewhere in the vehicle.

Now, if the battery was very low before, it is possible the fault was logged due to one of the computer modules malfunctioning due to the low battery. If this is the case, depending on the fault, the light might or might not clear on its own.

The best advice is to take it to a major auto parts chain. Most wil read the fault codes for free. Post them on the forum for an assessment.

The code readers can also clear the codes, but some stores have a policy that they will only read but not clear the codes for you. You can clear them yourself with an inexpensive OBDII reader or, of course a garage can do it for you.
