Default Check rear lights, cruise control disabled?

When I bought my car this warning was on. I tapped on the right rear red side marker and the warning went out and the cruise control has worked for 3 months. This last week the message came back so I replaced the socket and bulb at the right rear. The message went out but returned that night? I hopped out of the car and did a walk around. All lights are working? Can a different brand or wattage bulb cause this fault?

The brake light switch can cause that problem. Yes, I know, that doesn't make any sense.

Different brand unlikely, different wattage could definitely cause a problem. The systems on our cars are very sensitive, and I believe the lighting system is one that is 'balanced' with all the lamps, and a deviation in expected Wattage could set it off.

Did you check that the Turn Signals, Rear Fog Lights, Reverse Lamps, License Plate Lamps, and Third Brake Light are all functioning? Are the Brake Lights illuminating fully when the brake pedal is depressed, or do they appear unevenly lit or dimmer overall? Have you re-checked your wiring has not come loose or is nicked?

It could be coincidence and your Brake Light Switch could have given up at the moment, but that would be highly suspicious. I think recent changes would be a better starting point.

You need to replace the brake pedal position switch, here's a guide on how to do it.

Good luck
