Default Checking Transmission Fluid Level

I made a post yesterday about my recently purchases 1998 XJ8 L. When the car is cold it makes a whining noise between shifts. This noise does not seem to affect the performance of the Tranny, and when the Tranny gets good and warm, it goes away.

Some say that I should check the Transmission Fluid. How do I do this. I see no dipstick, etc. Also, what type of Fluid should I use in it?

I hate to seem silly, but I am new to Jags, and just trying to figure this out. Thanks.
