Default Class 1 receiver hitch - anyone have or know where to get one?

Class 1 receiver hitch 1 1/4 - anyone have a lead on one? Curt used to make one sku 11750 and 117503 but are out of production. It is going on a 98 XK8. If anyone knows of one that is confirmed in stock or knows of a used one I will buy it immediately. Maybe have an old one laying around? I was quoted $2000 at a custom fab shop (which is crazy). Any help/info is appreciated

Even though the description says it's not visible, anyone seen an earlier version of the XJ8 with a trailer hitch?

You may want to check into this before you go ahead .

I looked into this some time ago and found there is no manufacturer's tow rating for this car, which means you tow and get in a wreak you are screwed, hurt someone and in the US most likely get sued and lose the proverbial farm.

So. Bike rack hitches have a class rating, your car is not rated for ANY class of hitch.

What part of there is no hitch rating for this car don't you get.

It has nothing to do with what aftermarket is available.

However, as you have made up your mind have your "custom shop" make one for you, safe in the knowledge you will also invalidate your insurance.

I have no problem mounting a receiver considering I am not towing - again it is for a wherl mount bike rack - carbon frame bikes cannot be secured with a frame mount rack hanging off trunk because it can twist and break the carbon so a wheel mount rack hence receiver is required - Thanks for the input though

I've looked into the idea of fitting a tow bar for this specific reason. These guys in the UK say they manufacture a towbar for the X100 - even with tax and shipping it would be cheaper than the $2000 you have been quoted:-

https://www.watling-towbars.co.uk/

The towbar is listed for 1996-1998 models, but they will fit all the model years - the only thing that changed was the legal requirement to have a manufacturer's towing weight, so pre 1998 its legal to tow with an XK8 in the UK, after 1998 it isn't.

Where I live there are technical engineers who can certify changes like adding a tow bar to make the installation legal and keep the insurance company, police and Markel happy. I doubt if the police would be interested in how your cycle rack is fitted to the car, but you never know.

I have the hitch (or one similar) in the link above fitted to my car. I use it as a bike rack as well... Usually one carbon bike and one heavier mongoose mountain bike. No problems. When I fit the bar and hitch (got lucky and found a guy on eBay selling it, still in box - curt I believe) I felt confident nothing would go sideways and that it could hold a couple of bikes. No big deal.

Oh, and... On eBay, what I'll usually do when I run across a situation where it seems like people are listing stuff they don't really have, is I'll start messaging sellers. I'll write the first message, "copy" it and then quickly just send out the same message 10, 20 or 30 times to different sellers til I get a hit. For me, HUNTING for parts for all these doggone machines I have has gotten to be the FUN part - lol, well, sometimes... Happy hunting!!!

The hitches ARE out there...

Do you guys who use a Watling tow bar know if a 1 1/4 inch receiver mount bike rack will fit in it?

I didn't take this any further due to the cost of getting the towbar homologated where I live - you should call them and ask.
