Unhappy Code P0171 then car dead

I have a 2001 XKR 54K miles (I have owned this since 2004 25K). I was just driving home on the free-way and up pops restricted performance followed by the engine check light. I got the car home ok and checked the codes I have a P0171 i.e. bank 1 lean. I reset the code and tried to start the car. It turns over fine 3/4 tank of petrol (gas) starts and runs for like 3 seconds then splutters to a stop.

It had a new fuel filter and air filter 3K miles ago.
My guess is fuel pump gone. I know these cars have 2. The car had no problems b4 this happend and has been perfectly maintained by me. Note I live in CA so this car has never seen rain.

How can I verify this as I dont have a fuel pressure gauge. For that matter where is the fuel rail value for this anyway?

Any ideas ??? suggestions ???

UPDATE:
Ok I left the car for an hour and it now starts and runs ok. Will take it for a drive tomorrow and see if the code reappears!!

Thanks
Simon

First thing would be to check all the fuse boses and make sure no relays have worked loose in their sockets.

. . . and then there is the fuel pump wiring harness that has been as much a problem as the pumps themselves.

Based on your description it is going to fail as some inopportune time and place and then you will know for sure what the problem was.

Please let us known.

Thats my fear I will be stranded somewhere!!

What and where should I look re the fuel harness? All fuses and relays seem fine non were loose. Whats is strange is that when it started and died, I tried this several times with the same result. But then an hour later it started and drove fine, mind u I only went round the block. Engine was still hot, I did check visually for any sign of air leaks but all looks fine + I dont think an air leak would give you the starting followed by engine dying, that defiantly seemed to be fuel starvation, but on these cars who knows !!!

This car has a return-type fuel system controlled by a pressure regulator controlled by vacuum. I think this behavior may be a problem with the regulator. It starts since the pump is working on start up but the regulator is letting the pressure drop after start, giving you the lean code and the engine stops running.
