I want to replace the large, black plastic coil covers on my XKR with smaller ones that cover the coils ONLY. However, the same part number (AJ88281) apparently applies to BOTH types (see diagrams, taken from same Jaguar dealer's web site). (The situation's the same for the right-hand side coil cover, AJ88280.) I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for custom-made coil covers, such as those sold by Paragon, if I can get the same result with the OEM part.

What kind of 'small coil cover' are you looking for?
Here's my 2001 XK8 4.0 with the RH bank Coil Cover removed. (I don't have a photo of my 2005 4.2 as I never had to replace the cam cover seals but the design is similar.)
From the looks in the catalogs the AJ88281 number is good for the COIL Cover. The part numbers for the large camshaft cover starts C2Cxxxx VIN required. They list out at over $405.00 each.
So you should be good with the part numbers you have.
Looks to me as though one type of cover is held on by screws, as per GGGs photos for a 4.0 engine. The other type, as fitted to my 4.2 engine, is a clip-on fit. I doubt the two are interchangeable.
Graham -- I'm looking for the COIL cover, not the cam cover. However, as you can see from the diagrams I've posted, the same part number (AJ88281) is used for two DIFFERENT designs. I have the 4.2 S/C engine with "AJ88281" as shown in the diagram on the right -- the black plastic clip-on one. I would like to replace it with the "AJ88281" that is held on with screws (as astromorg notes).
XKRacer (Paragon) makes custom coil covers that fit the 4.2 S/C engine and are held on with screws (see photo). I don't know what additional modifications are needed in order to make this work, though.
