Aesthetically, I prefer the Coupe but what a pleasure to drive with the top down on the first ray of sun after the winter.
The convertible has 2 cars in one: two different driving feelings.
My vote goes for the convertible !

The coupe looks nicer than the convertible with the top up, but with the top down the convertible looks sexy as hell. This is my first convertible and living in Silicon Valley, we only have bad weather for maybe a month or two of the year? The rest is perfectly suitable for top down driving, and it's an amazing car.

As for the "I'm a man so I have a coupe for performance" people kinda makes me laugh. I guess all of the old guys cruising 5mph under the speed limit pretending to be speed racer need to have their fun too. :P

Default Convertible (Am I the only one here?)

When I went looking for a 2008 XK, all I ever wanted was the drop top. To me, anythnig else is "just a car".

No offense, please....

My first car was a '66 Fiat 1500 Spyder, and I've had at least one convertible in the fleet ever since. Right now I have 2 convertibles and a T-top. Fresh air was made to be enjoyed and hair was made to be blown!

Having said that, some of you have some mighty good looking coupes.

Cheers,

I Agree!

My Corvette is the same way, the only year I prefer the styling of the coupe to the convertible is 1963. The coupe XK v8 cars look awesome, but I really like the days the top is down.

I usually like the coupés better than the convertibles, and the XK8/R is no exception. Design is very important to me and most cars look better with a solid roof.
And I seem to be the only one here who like the E-type coupé must be a series 1 though.

Not bashing the convertibles though, lovely cars and I'd get one if I could afford to have more cars (and had a bigger garage) but my first choise will always be a coupé.

Default Convertible

My first car, a 1965 Pontiac Lemans, was a convertible. I only considered a convertible when looking for an XK8. I still need to buy the wind deflector, but few cars can qualify for a weekend trip with luggage room (golf clubs) and the top down.

Default Top down for me.

I put the top up on My XK8 convertible, and washed and waxed it. The weather turned cold and I've been driving it with the top up for two weeks now. The top had been down since I bought this car in November.

It's just not the same. The thrill is gone! It has warmed up now and the top is going down till the car gets dirty again.

Coupe's are beautiful but the convertible makes you feel 50 years younger. That would make me 18!

Default Convertible for me...

I would have to go the the convertible. It makes me feel more alive when I drop the top.. plus it's fun...

Default coupe or convertible

While I also agree that the aesthetics of the coupe (any coupe over its convertible siblings, whether it be a Porsche, or BMW 6 series, or the Jag XK's), are more stylish, and the cowl shake of the convertible drives me a little crazy, I bought a convertible XKR. I own coupe sports cars already (1972 De Tomaso Pantera and 1978 Datsun 280z, both in beautiful condition), I had never owned a convertible among the 25-30 cars that I've had. I live in Los Angeles suburbs where we have such good weather almost everyday that I thought it would be fun and exhilirating to have the wind blowing through what little hair I had left. I had a chance to buy a near perfect topless XKR with low mileage for so little money I just couldn't resisit. If not now, when?

I've owned both the coupe and convertible XKR and for me the convertible wins hands down. The most noticeable thing is that the suspension is softer, giving a nicer ride. Now you may lose some handling performance as a result, but honestly it still goes round corners as fast as I want, and if I wanted an out and out performance car I would have bought a Caterham.

Default My 66 Skylark Conv is gone

Howdy Folks:
I sent my Skylark Conv that I owned 30yrs and restored to auction last August. I replaced it with the XKR conv. It represents about all I ever really wanted in a car. The looks alone were worth the price to me.

Coupe. A much more aggressive, masculin look.

There was no question on my part in wanting the coupe for the looks, and the solid feel. In Florida, it's either too hot, too cold, or raining. I see convertible owners (of all makes) with the top up mostly. I have a convertible 62 Vette with both tops. I finally installed air conditioning last year (after owning it for 30 years!) and now the hard top stays on a lot...but when the top is down, it is a lot of fun.

Had ragtops all my life and now I'm a coupe convert due to the smooth lines, even though I'm on the gulfcoast...

R U kidding? It's my opinion the XK8 with the top down is the most beautiful of any convertible. Not only that, but you get to smell all the barbeques going on the weekend!
That said, the coupe (or coupay as they say in the British Top Gear), is a great looking hardtop as well.

BTW, the survey is closely matching the production/sales figures of convertibles to coupes...2/3s to 1/3.
