Default Coolant Leak

All,


Have recently discovered a coolant leak on the passenger side of my 98 NA Vert. I don't smell coolant while car is running, but it is consistently leaving puddles of coolant by the passenger front tire in the morning. (car is a daily driver) I do not see any leaks evident from hoses or clamps in the engine bay. I am suspecting some leak to/from the overflow bottle and went with a new coolant cap...just hoping... but no joy as puddles till exist. Any coaching points you all might have greatly appreciated. Kitty needs to learn not too pee on the floor.

Dave,

If you fill the expansion tank all the way to the cap when things are cold it will expel some coolant to the catch tank when things gets hot. If the catch tank is already full ... or if there is a hose leak nearby ... some will spill onto the ground in the area you described.

If there's no leak, this will be self-limiting. I'd suggest not adding any coolant for a few days (assuming no low-coolant indication) and see if it stops.

You need to remove the fender liner and inspect the overflow tank, there may be a leak.

I've seen a few instances of the Atmospheric Recovery Bottle cap (arrowed in red) being detached:

You should also check the pipe from the Expansion Tank (arrowed in green) for integrity and that it's correctly connected to the Bottle.

You mentioned a new coolant cap. Got the right one? If it is not sealing properly it may send coolant to the overflow bottle and not recover it while cooling.

Ya I bit the bullet and picked up a cap from the dealer. Would hope it to be correct.
