Has anyone used this stuff before to find a crack or leaking part, i was speaking to an engineer about this leaking oil from the cam cover area and he said to try crack detection spray and said he used it alot in the past with good results.

anyone ever heard of the stuff, you use a spray cleaner to clean the area then spray on a dye then spray on a developer spray and if there are any cracks the dye will soak in and show up as a red line. sounds interesting

I haven't used this one but I have used the commercial Ardrox system for many years. Word of warning, if its based on the Ardox system beware, clean the area to be tested thoroughly,do not spray the penetrant, dab a very mall quantity in the suspect area, allow to dry for the specified period & again wipe the area with cleaner on a cloth then spray the developer, like the penetrant dye it will go everywhere. Its hard to describe actually how to use this stuff correctly, enough to say that in the aircraft industry its use is controlled due to the problems caused by spurious results.
Re-iterate this stuff gets everywhere!!

 

Further to this, there is a U tube vid titled the Fundamentals of Liqud Penetrant which is worth a look if you have never used any of these systems before.

 

I use spray on foot powder to find small or large leaks. Clean the area well and then spray the foot powder all around the area. Run the engine only a few minutes. It will show up quickly. I have been using this for years with perfect results.

 

That is a NDT (Non Destructive Testing) method called PT (Penetrate Testing). The cleaner cleans the surface and any holes or cracks and may leak into your crankcase if the part is still on the car same with the dye. After that evaporates usually 5 minutes then the dye is applied let it soak in usually for 15 minutes. That is wiped off with a clean lint free rag with a bit of cleaner on it (almost dry). Let that evaporate and apply developer if you do have a leak it will be drawn out toward the developer use light coats or you can mask any cracks or holes. Lint dirt and other trash can cause you to think there is a defect as it will hold dye.
