Default Cruise Control

This is not a huge deal, but the one thing that does not function on the car is the cruise control. I drove it from Olympia, WA to Palm Springs, CA, about 1,100 miles in mid January and got along just fine. However, there were several times I wished CC worked to give my right foot and leg a bit of a rest and shift of position during long hours on I-5. Can anyone give me an outline of possible issues? I imagine it can be anything from a blown fuse to a module or a collection of other things. I am thinking of going by an independent shop nearby and, unless the cost is huge (which then would make it a huge deal) get cruise control back in operation before the 1,100 mile return trip in mid April. Any thoughts?

Is is giving errors like "CC Not Available" ? If its is giving no errors at all and the red light never comes on then it is likely to be the ECU causing it(or the switch itself). If it is giving errors then a common problem is the brake light switch. There are 2 microswitches on a bracket that can fail and cause this problem.

Does the red light on the switch come on? If it doesn't and no errors its probably the ECU or the switch itself.
It can't be a fuse because it gets its power from the same fuse as the instrument panel so that wouldn't work either if blown.
I went through all this on mine and it was the ECU causing it. ASI rebuilds them for a reasonable price.

Why is no one suggesting that it may be the brake light switch causing the problem ?

I did in my first response to him. But when the switch is bad you usually get a "CC not available" error, If no error its the ECU.

I had the same problem. I ordered a new switch and that didn't help, replaced a brake switch on the brake pedal, that didn't help. Engine started running rough as time went on and I noticed when I turned the cruise on and off it effected the idle of the engine that was running very rich. After admitting defeat, I took her to the local Jag dealer. They put her on there "Wonder Scanner" and told me that the ECU
(Engine Control Unit) was bad. Soooo, they handed the unit to me in a box. Had the unit rebuilt and the dealer install it. Haven't taken delivery on the car but the dealer says it solved the problem. The cost of rebuilding the unit was $150.00 and you can PM me, if you wish, for the contact into. I would give you the info on this post but I don't want to violate the posting rules. I would like to give you the price the dealer charged me for their time and trouble but I'm to ashamed.

ASI charged me $150 to rebuild my ECU and did it quickly and it fixed my CC problem and the engine running bad problem. I had also first replaced the 2 microswitches for the brakes and it made no difference.
