Default Dealer says code is P0037

Hi all
Picked car up after oil service and noticed engine light was on.
They said nothing to do with what they did, but code shows P0037 which is a sensor re oxygen in (bank?sensor?) and they are fitted in pairs.

Not being a technical person would ask you guys to comment

They want £468 inc to sort it....reasonable?
Thanks in advance
Brian

This was Harwoods Jaguar

I guess 'Harwoods' is a Jag dealer? If so, that's not a surprising price. A good indy would charge half that and a DIY type would get the job done for maybe 75 pounds.

Am guessing at an oxygen sensor, am also guessing that you have a later XK than my 96 (but you've not said and it's not in your signature strip). Early models (such as mine) only have one 02/lambda sensor whereas later UK models had two (one upstream and one downstream).

From memory the 02 sensor is not that difficult a job as my mechanic changed mine on my drive for £20. I bought brand new from Jaguar which were from memory £125 per side when I fitted by decat pipes.

Am sure you could probably get an aftermarket one for around £40 new but here's a 2nd hand one on Ebay

UPSTREAM HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR LAMBDA **GENUINE JAGUAR** X-Type XK8 XKR 2001-2010 | eBay

Ask them for a breakdown of the costs as am reasonably sure that charge sounds a little on the high side, but certainly get the part number for the sensor concerned so you can google/ebay it before buying.

Marky
Thanks for your response.
Its a 2004 model, like I said, I am not technical and not in a position to buy from Ebay and get it fitted.
You said that you paid £125, they quoted £130 X 2 + a couple of hours work.
Need info as to why I need to have two...they said they come in pairs fact or fiction?
Thanks for your thoughts

Brian, £130 each would be correct for the genuine sensors however I replaced just one upstream sensor with the code P1646(heater only failure)with a Denso manufactured one from Euro Car Parts(currently on sale for £75.99 with discount code jansale) This is the same manufacturer as supplies Jaguar so same quality but a lot cheaper.
Even if they have to replace both sensors this save you a considerable amount.

£125 as it was in 2012

Probably they are saying two as IIRC it's a balancing act between the 2 sensors which gives an overall average, if they quote for 2 then they'll defo clear the fault.

Since you seem happy to pay dealer prices then would suggest you get them to do it, since nothing in Surrey comes cheap

They don't come in pairs (it's not a matched set) but it's prudent to replace both sides if you don't absolutely have to keep costs to a minimum.
