Default Discovered a hidden radar detector in my Jag.

I was looking for the OBD port in my car and discovered a K-40 "Undetectable UN3000" controller behind a door to the left of the steering column. It was not working so I changed a 3 amp fuse and voila! Further research on the internet revealed it's the high end K-40 custom installed front and rear hidden system priced at over $1200.00 in 1998. All the indicator leds are installed in the instrument cluster along with various audio alerts. Cant wait to try it out.

Hope this car remains as good a deal as it appears.

Nice find!

Reading the reviews it is very sensitive and would appear to detect radar from almost 1 mile out.

Careful, don't take the car into Canada or Virginia.

Why it's an install that's hidden, so how can they detect it? And what will they do?

My Van den Plas had the K40 & it's a great unit.

Uh, the state cops have radar detector detectors and you pay $100 minimum for being the proud owner. The detector is forfeit too. Ask me how I know!

Man! They can't possibly take a built in radar detector.... can they? Even if you're just driving thru the state?

That's cold...

They will escort you to the nearest garage to have it removed at which point it is evidence of your malfeasance.
The law says you can't use it but simple possession in a vehicle is prima facie evidence that you are.
If transiting VA, pull the fuse so it doesn't emit the hetrodyne frequencies the detector detectors detect. (Had to say that!)

Yah, I had my Radio Shack confiscated by an Ontario Provincial a few years back. He was very friendly and courtious but he really razzed me for owning that Radio Shack unit! Gave me a ticket for the detector and only a warning for speeding, so I can't complain. The worst thing was my wife TOLD me to unplug the detector.
(Why are they always right?)

That's wild, was this a dealer option or something? I have the same old thing. And I can't for the life of me figure out where the guts of it are. It works intermittently and the button/dial next to the Valet button is broken. Occasionally it starts beeping loudly for no reason. There's also a red LED integrated into the left air vent. Really weird... I may take it to Best Buy and have them professionally dig into and uninstall it. I just had this done on an Escalade I bought for $90 I think. I HATE aftermarket alarms! Anyway, funny to see someone else with the same thing. Glad yours works! I think?

Also, I don't care about mine. I have a V1.

I found the same thing but different make & model, in the same place, after buying my car. I cut the wires, and later removed the unit from the engine compartment as these are illegal in Ontario. My previous owner was unaware of this feature so it must have been installed by an even earlier owner.

As long as the radar detector is passive, that it, it's a detector, not a radar jammer, it's pretty hard to get caught, especially if the detector is hidden, as specified here. So, if you detect the radar, even instant on, ahead of you, then you're probably ok. However, if you jump on the breaks when the cop hits you with instant on, he likely won't get a good speed on you but will likely know you have a detector. In VA and Canada, if they can justify a search of your car and find the detector, you could be in trouble.

If you have enough money and can fight the ticket, you may be able to get away with it in the US because the Supreme Court has ruled that the air waves are public domain. If all you are doing is listening (i.e. detecting) you can make an argument that it's legal. That said, it would be cheaper to pay the fine. However, to jam radar you have to transmit and that requires an FCC license and will really get you in trouble.

A hidden issue on the radar detector detector is if it is FCC approved here in the USA? I am not sure but if it is not it is illegal to use, yes even by police. I became aware of the issue in Atlanta years ago when they installed radios to set off your radar detector in an effort to slow down drivers, seems they were not approved by the FCC and thus illegal. They were removed when it came to be public knowledge.
Love my escort!! Shame it does not work on advanced notice with laser. When it goes off on laser (high use here in Florida) it is time to slow down and look for the lights behind you as you are caught!

The FCC ONLY have to approve and license it if it broadcasts. That is, if it's a radar jammer. RADAR jammers are illegal. However, if the RADAR detector are passive devices, that is, the only detect a RADAR signal, then the FCC is not involved and they are not illegal.

Mark,
Now that I reflect, you are correct about the passive feature.
Thanks!

First of all, your in a Jaguar, its a gentleman's car and speeding is not condoned as you represent one of the finest league of vehicles and owners in the USA.

I use to have money tied up in high end detectors.
That old detector from the 90's is not as good as modern detectors. Modern detectors have cloaking that will hide it from radar detector detectors and turn itself off.

But in the end, going no more than 5 miles over the limit is the key to staying ticket free.

2.If other cars are going faster, follow them, look for brake lights, then hit yours, let the lead cars be your detector.

I employed this tactic today on Hwy 407 eastbound from Toronto. A pickup truck pulling a fairly large fishing boat on a trailer was cruising at speeds approaching 140 kmh. I won't reveal what peak speed my GPS indicated because I don't know who reads these posts and I don't want to receive a ticket in the mail. 50 kmh over the limit of 100 here can result in a 10,000.00 fine and impounding of the vehicle.

Hi guys, I have the same K40 radar detector. I too have just found it behind my grill. I don't have any idea how to use it! I would like to get a book or manual or some guidance. Is it on all the time? Does it chirp, tone, howl, what? I am going to locate a local, 30 miles, dealer to find out what he knows. I need a manual! Thanks.
