Default Driver's Door Clunk

I know a disconnected battery affects the the power window tracking, but what about the door?

My 2001 XK8 convert was stored in my garage on trickle for three months, and it fired up just fine. The window was fine. But now the door seems a little strange.

When opening the door on a convert, it's supposed to droop a little bit, correct? But when I close it, it sounds and feels like it is not hitting the latch correctly. Is it "just tighten the hinge bolts, dummy" or is there some mystery-fix that only you senior members know about?

Is it the door or the window you're having a problem with? Most cars with windows have plastic spaces that keep the windows in line. The driver's door on my Camaro and the passenger door on my XK8 have at least one broken. When those spaces are broken, the window clunks against whateve it hit when the door is closed. That may be what you're hearing.

Does it make the same noise whether the window is up or down?

It's the door. Same clanky metal-on-metal sound whether window(s) is up or down, and same if top is up or down. The passenger door slamming sounds nice and solid, like a Jaguar should. Damn, I dunno. Maybe I've got a cricket in my left ear. :}

Check the door striker. Is there abnormal wear on it? Takes very little movement in the door alignment to affect how the door contacts the striker.

If the sound is like something loose inside, on the drivers door there is a shield above the door handle that can work loose (there is not one on the passenger door). It's a tedious job to get to it. You have to disassemble the inner trim panel, leave the window up, you can reach it through the opening by the door handle. Also your door should not droop when you open it. If it droops you door hinge may be worn. you should be able to tell if the hinge is worn, open door and lift door up and down. there should be no play, the door should be tight. If it's loose then it may be hitting the striker. Good Luck

The window is to drop when opened and stay in that position and close when the door is closed. If it is not doing this then you need to reprogram the window. To do this you push the window down button and hold until you hear or feel a click. Then push the window button for the window to close and hear or feel the click. This should be done when you are in the car and the door is closed. The window should operate properly by opening a slight bit when the door is opened and close when the door is closed.

This problem is often caused by a weak battery voltage. 10.5 or below they loose memory settings.

If this is not the problem or the cure let us know.

Default Door Clunk, (Popping?)

Alwann;
May be on the wrong path here, but check the Frequently Asked Questions Sticky, Scroll Down to Interior/Mechanical Issues, then the issue of Popping Door Hinges. I, with other members, was experiencing a metal to metal sound when opening the driver's door (passenger door, no problem) and found that a bolt on the door of the upper hinge had worked loose and felt as if the door had dropped and had an associated metal to metal sound. You will also find a diagram of the hinges that Gus posted that may guide you to a fix.

Thanks for all suggestions. RCSign & RJag: I checked the striker and it is worn almost through. Will need to replace that and then do a close-up inspection of the hinges check hinges for wear. As several said, it seems like an alignment issue.

Tell what you find to be the cause.
