Early 1996 XK8
Hi all,
Just signed up so this is my first post. I have a 2010 XKR convertible (lovely car), but my father-in-law has an equally beautiful early XK8. The details are:
VIN: SAJJGAED3AR001213.
VCATS Label in boot: 10th June 1996.
Engine number: CE9604111301 (built on 11th April 1996 at 13:01.
First registered: 8th August 1996.
Mileage: 32k miles and looks and sounds gorgeous.
I have seen many threads (not just on this forum) regarding people trying to trace build dates and production numbers (including RHD versions). What would be really nice would be to find out the date a car was driven off the production line.
The engine build date cannot be used, since many engines were built and stockpiled, waiting for car bodies to go into.
The VIN seems unreliable too. Tables seem to show no distinction between LHD and RHD cars and body type.
Did the first production XK8 have a VIN ending in 1036?
VCATS date may be more accurate, since it is the electronics and module test date direct off the production line?
Looking forward to replies from people far more knowledgeable than me.
Thanks.

Hi 434 and welcome.
According to Ford, your father in law's RHD coupe build date is showing as the 7th August 1996, a little later than the date on the VCATS label (mine is the same).
Someone will be along shortly to invite you to introduce yourself in the New Members area. You can post some pictures once you've made a few more posts.

Presume you're into radio in some form or another?

Thanks for the information.
One of the tables I have seen regarding XK8/R productions figures shows 13 being made/released in June 1996. Apparently, June was the first month customer cars started appearing (apart from promotional and demo cars before that).
So I was kind of thinking if the FIL's car was one of these 13.
It's off the road at the moment - we need to put a new alternator on it.
Sounds like your car has the same time lag between VCATS and registration.
