Default Engine noise

I attach a copy of Youtube video of my XK8. The clicking sound has increased over the months.

I noise seems to go if I rev it up but once the engine settles down to an idle, the clicking starts again.

Please copy and paste link below:-

I would appreciate any advice.

Cheers
Joseph

Sounds a bit like rod knock. But I don't think it is since it goes away. It could be something related to oil pressure.

I would check for anything loose in the engine bay, that may cause the noise.

Where does the sound seem to come from?

I would say the knocking comes from the top end of the engine, have checked to ensure nothing loose. Everything seems ok. but still knocking until the engine warms up.

The more common ticking sound is coming from the purge valve in the left side wheel well. Should come and go very 30 or 60 sec, as it is computer controlled. There are a number of posts and TSBs. Pretty much goes away as you rev up a bit.

AZ's thoughts on oil pressure related makes sense if the noise shows only at idle, although I wouldn't expect it to disappear completely once the motor warms up?

Quick free check to eliminate the accessory drive train: remove the serpentine belt and start the motor from cold. Don't run in this state for more than half a minute or so, which should be long enough to determine if there's any difference.

Thanks for all your advice, have also carried out a full service, oil change & filter, spark plugs, fuel filter & air filter. Checked the engine for any loose parts but nothing.

Will check the serpentine belt this weekend and see what happens.

Will keep you updated.

Cheers

Try unplugging the VVT solenoids, one at a time then start from cold and see if the noise still exists.

I sounds like the belt tensioner. View this link and click on video #2

I'm leaning to Gus's diagnosis. My wife had the same on her XJ8. Remove the belt and see if the noise goes away. Run the engine for a short time or it will overheat.
