Default Engine rebuild

Anyone have info on any engine rebuild sites such as eBay or other? I have seen a couple with prices around $2800. Does this seem about right?

Parts costs are around $1K to start, so figure that into your expectations. $2800 seems fair.

I would ask what they are calling a rebuild. A traditional rebuild top and bottom can not be done for $2800 on a Jaguar 4.0 V8. When I was looking at doing this it was going to run about $6k and that was doing everything except machining myself.

Here are some ballpark numbers:
Machining: $1500 minimum (see below)
pistons and rings: $800 for a custom made set, double that for OEM Jaguar
camshafts: $1000
gaskets: $500
bearings: $100
valve lifters, seats and springs: $500
hardware: $500

That is assuming you can reuse the connecting rods and have a block with iron sleeves which can be honed. If you have a nickasil block or your block needs resleeving that will increase machining cost substantially.

I just went through this and decided to buy a used engine instead. I got one from a 2003 xjr for $1500 shipped on Ebay. I did a dry compression test on the cold engine and the results were great so I had it installed. It sounds great and butt dyno feels right, but I am currently trying to track down a fuel trim issue. I decided to go this route because buying a rebuilt one or having mine rebuilt was far more expensive, but this way is obviously more risky.
