Default Engine went off, RPM goes to 0

Hi all,

Drove my Jaguar X-Type 2002, 3.0 yesterday and i encounter this, my engine went off when i stop my car abruptly, and the RPM falls to '0' very quickly. But if i slow down the car before stopping, RPM will remain between 0-1 and the engine does not go off.

Any advice on the problem and solution?

Thanks in advance!

Eileen, I am assuming you have an automatic transmission in your car. If so, then I would be looking at the torque converter. sounds like that is getting old and not releasing like it should. Something you can try to confirm this is to take the car out for a drive on a rarely used road. Get the car up to say 45+ mph (or whatever speed you know the problem will occur at) and then tap the brake just momentarily, wait say 2 seconds and then apply the brakes to do your abrupt stop. Did the car die this time. If no, then this pretty much confirms the torque converter is bad and it is not releasing like it should (ie, sticking). By tapping the brakes, the car will disengage the torque converter to allow the car to coast, giving it more time to do what it needs to and allow the engine not to die. If the car still dies, then you are most likely looking at an issue with the transmission. I think you will find that this will only happen in select gears.

Please notice that you need to be above 45 mph for the torque converter to be the issue. At below 45 mph, the torque converter normally does not engage (as is evident by stepping on the gas gently below 45 mph and seeing the engine RPMs rise slightly before the car picks up speed). Above 45 mph, the engine RPMs remain constant and only rise as the car's speed picks up.

Not quite in agreement with Thermo. Eileen, how many miles (or km) on your car? Are spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter in good condition? Has transmission fluid ever been serviced? Solution to your stalling problem could be a relatively simple tune-up. I'd do that before I did expensive work of replacing torque converter.
