Default Engine swap??

I have a 99 XK8. The knocking in my engine has gotten worse, and I found about a quarter of a bearing shell in my oil pan. I think this lump is a gonner.

I located another engine at a breaker, and it sounds very good. The difference is that this engine is in a 2000 XJ8.

I was wondering if the swap would be a simple plug and play, like just replacing the engine and plugging it into my XK8 harness plug, or is there more involved?

As I see it the sensors should be the same, between the two, or am I wrong? Please give me all the info you can. No info will be turned away.

I would not be able to pay the dealer, if they needed to flash anything, to get my beast going, so before I put down what is left of a loan consolidation, any information would be appreciated.

Would I be better off swapping all my sensors with the other engine?.......Thanks......Mike

Both engines are AJ27's and should be a direct swap. From injectors to flex plate should be plug n play. All that is just hardware but the sensors should all be compatible also. I would suggest that the ECM should stay with the car that brought it.

This is John from Minnesota, the person you bought the top from. I put a 2003 engine from a XJ8 into my 2001 XK8. No problems at all, everything hooked up. Plus the 2003 motor had the updated tensioners. Let me know if I can help you. Take care, John

have you puled the oil pan off yeat? if so did did get to the crank shaft ? you might get lucky with rods and main berrings. i would check before i comdemed your motor . that might be at least worth a look if you can get the pan off before you pull the motor. all the best and good luck Dan L

I pulled the pan, and a rod journal was scored.

The seventyfour thousand mile replacement engine should be here on Friday. It has a 120 day warranty, and is coming with the harness intact.

The more I got into the old engine, the more I kinda think it was put together with spare parts, and was junk when I bought it.......Now I will have an engine AND trans with less than 75,000 miles on them.....Thanks for your concern......Mike

ALL AJ27 Normally Aspirated XK8/XJ8 4.0 engines will work-plug&play (1999-2003 XJ8 and 1999-2002 XK8).

The problem with swapping an ECM is that 'Immobilization-setup' must be performed when the replacement ECM is introduced to a different CAN bus.

Leaving the original ECM is the preferred choice UNLESS you have the means to perform the configuration.
