flaky door electrics

1997 xk8 147k. intermittently and without any clear eliciting cause, the controls on the driver's side door will cease operation. at times only one or two controls will fail, while at other times all will fail and the "door open" warning will appear. the problem always resolves spontaneously, usually just by parking the car for a short period of time. any clue as to cause and fix greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

Most likely is a loose or corroded electrical connection. After all, your car is now 16 years old. I would suggest removing the door card and unplugging and reconnecting all of the several connections under there.
