Default Flushing the heater core?

Hey gang, I am not getting heat on my new-to-me car even after leaving it on for awhile and running the temp from hi to low. I have read up on this and realize it could be the valve that opens and closes to let warm water into the heater core but want to did the free fix before throwing money at it.

My question is: are the inlet and outlet pipes to the heater core the side by side pipes behind the coolant resevoir? Has anybody tried this before? Any success?

Also, I did the scan for the climate control codes and came up with 14 and 24. Reading the codes is like reading Chinese. Any idea what these codes mean? "14" = ...water temperature input malfunction and "24" = ...face vent demand potentiometer fault. Huh?

Thanks for any help offered.

The heater system has an electric pump. First thing, check fuse #15 (10 Amps) in the engine compartment fuse box.

Yes check the fuse first and verify that the pump has power. If you have power check to see if the pump is running. Now it could be running but not pumping. If this pump is like the pump from my 95 xj6 the rotating motor is not a direct drive to the pump. Both the motor and the pump are separated by a shields, what makes the pump work is a magnetic field that connects the motor to the pump. As the polarity of the motor matches with the pump they rotate in unison. When I looked at my pump the motor was working but the pump was filled with slug, I cleaned it and all was good.

Thanks Gus, and Whitey. I will get to it this weekend in between house projects. Got the car a couple months ago as a steal (97, 140k, $4k) and finally got to it a couple weeks ago. Just in time to put it away here in Minne-snow-ta.
