Default Transmission problem

I was getting onto the highway and at about 40-45 mph I pressed the pedal to the floor, and went to 4000k rpm and I almost did a face plant into the steering wheel. it was almost like the tranny downshifted but did not re-engage, had to let off the pedal to get the car to go and when I pressed back on the pedal lightly, car took off again. Felt like the torque convertor was not engaging or was slipping or my 3-4 clutch bands were not engaging properly.

Anybody else have this problem?

Car is a 01 xk8 with 78k miles and as fara as I know the fluid has never been changed.

About the only thng you can easily check is fluid level, get it done by someone experienced in this tranny type. Check the OBD II system for codes as well, also by a specialist. Just for houskeeping, the tranny has no bands, just multiple clutch packs like a motorcycle. They are pressed together by big hydraulic pistons to engage them.

oldmots is right. Get the codes read out. ZF has "so called" sealed for life transmissions. An independent shop that works on lots of ZF transmissions was able to check & rebuild mine. Other shops would offer to find a rebuilt ZF and install it for you.
