Default Foil strips on back of sun visor clips?

Hi all,
I've been posting in the 'XK8 Electrical Failure...Bad ECU? thread.

As part of that I've asked if anyone knows why foil strips are on the sun visor (vanity light) clips, where the connecting lug goes in to the headliner. The foil on mine had worked loose and I think it might have shorted the visor light contacts to the car roof.

Does this foil need to be on the visor clip or not?
The base of securing screw would be very close to, if not actually through the hole in the clip and likely to touch the foil.
Not sure how clever a design that is where exposed contacts and a metal vehicle roof are in close proximity.

I think my BPM may have been upset severely by this.

Appreciate any wisdom/advice.

This may be a case of a side effect of what the previous owner has done. I don't believe that aluminum foil was a Jaguar factory approved method of doing things.

Hi giandanielxk8,
Thanks for your reply, you may well be right.

I think I'll leave the foil out of the equation and just use a bit of electrical tape, to the hold the visor clip lugs tight when I put them back into the headliner.

I'll investigate the BPM tomorrow, to see if it's be damaged because of this.

+1

It certainly doesn't have a factory look about it.

Thanks Graham.

Well I'm definitely ditching those foil strips and will wrap the wires in some good quality electrical tape.
I'm also going to check the ECM for the heck of it today too, just to make sure nothing looks amiss on the connectors and PCB board.

After that it will be the time to get the BPM out and check the connectors and PCB. If my hunch is right, I'm going to find something isn't right there but do have a correct replacement part ready to go.

Will let everyone know what the results are.
