Has anyone converted their pretty much useless rear seat to a fold down configuration and expand the trunk capacity? I'm talking about a coupe.

 

You would have to cut a good bit of steel out of the rear structure to do that, and in the end I am not sure you would gain much usable space, what with the fuel tank in between.

 

Charlie hit it on the head. The fuel tank pretty much makes this idea impossible. I suppose you could replace it with a flat fuel cell, but I think the trunk space taken up with a fuel cell would be worse than you would gain back with a pass through and you would also affect the cars close to neutral weight balance.

 

I have heard of people taking the seat out (coupe and convertible) to put in big speakers for a really great sound system. Another option might be to replace the seat with a package tray.

 

Thanks guys, you've answered the question. At least my Dahon folding bike fits in the existing trunk, will make do with that.
