I've just dismantled the front of the car to replace the top shock absorber mount but having done that it turns out the lower mount has also failed, I have ended up with various little bits of plastic pieces from it. Does anyone have the part number for it, I guess I will have to wait a few days but it seems wrong to put it back together knowing it is broken.

 

I may have found the answer - my confusion is that mine is a shaped piece of plastic that supports the spring fully but the replacement I have seen is just a flat washer. A post I read indicates that the flat washer is the new replacement but it doesn't look as suitable as the original, can anyone throw light on it?

Just off to buy a ball joint separator as I want to replace the lower wishbone bushes whilst it is apart and the one I have isn't big enough - it seems the ball joints on the Jag are larger than those on a Mini!

 

I just went through that exercise on my 1997 a few weeks ago, and posted plenty of photos and part numbers...including a close look at the "spring packer" you're talking about, which sits between the spring and the lower spring pan. Here's the thread:
