Front wheel bearing replacement - Jaguar specialist job?

Default Front wheel bearing replacement - Jaguar specialist job?

I think one of my front wheel bearings needs replacing (I would probably have both done) and, looking at related threads on here it appears to be quite a tricky job for the home mechanic.

My question is, if I can source the parts, could it be done by the guy down the road who services my wife's Renault (as it happens, he has just replaced her wheel bearings), or is it really a job for a (much more expensive) Jaguar specialist?

You do need special tools (ABS ring/nut socket) which your average shop probably will not have and make sure when you get the bearings, get a kit, you will also need to replace the circlips, you also get a grease spreader (plastic ring) that goes between the hub and bearing, these all come in the kit and not with just the bearings.

Thanks for the info, XKRacer. I think I'll wait until I'm next over in England and get it done properly at a Jaguar specialist.

I have just been quoted £588 + VAT for both front bearings by a main dealer I have used before in the UK. About £150+VAT of this is for parts, so they're asking around £438 + VAT for labour. Does this seem reasonable to you?

It is high, but unsurprising from a dealer, I charge about £400 for both sides all in, you take a bit of a gamble with wheel bearings, sometimes they are easy sometimes they are not. I have done one side before in just over an hour, where as I have done another that took me 5 hrs..... I would find a good indy rather than a main dealer.

If I had my car within 200 miles of XKRacer, I wouldn't consider any other shop.

Second quote from an indy 3 miles away from the dealer: £200 labour & £100 parts. That's pretty much half price!

@ Frog There you go not a bad price. Jagutech have a good rep, I would be happier seeing those guys than a dealer.

I just found the special tool on eBay for £85, so £300 total seems like a bargain to get the whole job done, including parts, without any hassle and without getting dirty.

Indeed. The tool does look very specialised. I would probably ever only use it once.

Incidentally, the only reason I would go through Jagutech rather than XKRacer is that my parents live near Jagutech. I never go to Norfolk where XKRacer is, though I did actually buy my XKR in Norwich

Two bearings are $65 U.S. @ RockAuto.com and the base rate manual shows this to be a 2.7 hour job. The ABS ring removal tool is $123 to buy.

300 pounds for parts (not including labor) from a dealer sounds excessive--greatly excessive. This looks like a good job for a good Indy.

I had this with my XK, I've done bearings before so I thought easy, wack it off, borrow a press and on again... oh no.

For some reason you need a special tool to remove the ABS rotor (which is also the hub nut). I had all the parts and realised this... £100 for the tool or £150 for specialist to fit. I paid the specialist assuming he would have all the other tools an ex Jag dealer mechanic told me you'd need and he didn't.

Could have done it myself.

If you know what you're doing and changed bearings before buy the tool and do it yourself (some clubs let you rent one) if not pay someone, I will be buying one next time.

Most of the time the ABS rotor needs replacing and be careful not to damage ball joints as they are pressed into the wishbones. Also take care when removing the ABS sensors as these cost around £100.

I bought one too.

I'm also half thinking about buing a press, can anyone say what TON value would be needed to cope with wheel bearing and ball joint changes?

Did mine myself ! Wouldn't do it again.
It's not enough having the right rotor nut socket, its finding a means of holding the hub when you have to use a 6ft. extension to undo the bloody nut. I ended up bending some wheel studs!

My plan is to drill the stud pattern into my garage work bench and bolt it to the bench.
