my XK8 2005 coupe 's fuel gauge indicates only 3/4 level when the fuel tank seems to be full
the "reserve level" light lits up after 250 miles approximately.
Lately, he car didn't start well, and when I put in petrol , it did
this makes me think that the fuel level is perhaps consistent with the fuel gauge ?
any ideas ?

Suggest you fill tank and take a resistance reading from fuel level sender. I don't have them to hand but l have seen values listed by jaguar.
l have had the same problem in the past with my 2000 xkr, very inconvenient running out of fuel miles from nowhere.

 

Erwin, don't forget that gauge will not display true reading until it cycles on off on ignition cycle.

I learned that by letting car idle while filling.
