Fuel pump replacement; getting around the heat shield 03 XKR
Hey Guys,
Trying to fix the fuel pump today like Reverend Sam did awhile back. I think it’s just a check valve issue.
Anyways, I noticed my XKR had a heat shield covering the fuel line and it’s vertical entry into the fuel tank. Removed the nuts of the heat shield and I am having a hard time figuring out how to get it moved out of the way.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get the heat shield out of the way to access the fuel line fitting?
Thanks!
Corey

Corey, I kept trying to figure a way over the heat shield and it turns out the line was above the heat shield looking from over top of the rear end. Like you, it took me a while to fine it and laying on your right side, the arm could snake up to the lines (4L) and help snap the tool on the line and then use a lang screw driver to push it into the fitting.
Be sure and drain the tank, I used a 1/4 inch tube that went into the tank 44 inches, that got it down to half a gallon and the pickup is about a 1 inch above the bottom of the tank, so not a critical effort needs to get it completely empty.
You have to be forward of the rear end to see the lines, about a 1 1/2 inch opening. good luck.

Thanks for the info! I finally realized that you do not need to remove the heat shield. What was frustrating is that I could not get the disconnect tool to fit into the fuel line fitting. The fuel line is pushed off to one side and needs to be bent back into a centered position in order for the plastic disconnect piece to insert. Unfortunately, after 4 hours I could not get it to work but I am going to try again this week using the tools that Robert Krause recommended one make on his website. I am going to use the Dorman 800-009 and create a shaft to help insert the disconnect. One of my issues, I suspect, is that the fuel line disconnect pieces I bought from Advance Auto Parts were not rigid enough. The Dorman tool looks to be a little more robust and combined with bending the fuel line into a centered position I am hopeful that we will see success. Talk about a frustrating day of work! The best part is that I had to spend a lot of time getting the heat shield bolted back up and nicked a few knuckles along the way. Once it is completed though great joy will overcome me every time I turn the key! Hopefully that is..
