Default Gas tank coating

Gas tank is rusting and I loath to pay $1,800 for a new one, so has anybody ever had the inside of their tank sealed?

Common solution to elderly auto restoration. There are DIY products and even some of the few radiator shops remaining offer this service. Extensively used in the tractor restoration arena.

Most motorcycle shops sell a two part cleaner/sealer and I think EASTWOOD has a couple different ones.

A trick I heard of while evaluating replacement of a 33 year old Volvo tank was to remove the tank, hang it from a support, pour a quart of sharp gravel into the tank and shake. At least that would get all the loose rust off. Then apply the tank sealant.

I ended up replacing the tank but it was less than $200 . . . new . . . shipped.

I have read bad reviews on the dyi poor in the tank solutions so I never tried it. On my Datsun 280Z I had the tank removed and shipped to one of the companies that cut it open, clean and seal the tank. I was very happy with the results but the price was high but then I had it done at a shop $1,000 for all including the new fuel pump.

I've used the poor in solutions on my motorcycle tanks for years, very good results. The trick is to get the tank clean and rust free and a good coating of the tank sealer. Might be difficult on larger tanks.

Tried on a large fire truck fuel tank - fail. Work done by shop that 'specializes' in the repair.
