Default The Good, bad and OH NO !! what happened now !

Been a while since ive posted but only because I havent had anything to chat about. I was having an issue with the ABS module and upon sending it to the Ebay guy out of CA I was told it had some damaged circuits on the actual board itself. He offered to completely rebuild the module for $200.00 and given the fact that new ones are way more expensive that I was happy to pay him.

It did take about 2 weeks to get it back but after finally getting my mobile mechanic to re install it the brake issue and all my dash lights are finally fixed, WHOO HOOO !!

So yesterday I decide to drive my lonely (been a month since I drove it at least) Jag home from the warehouse (50 miles), air her out and over the weekend deal with the driver side rear quarter window which is now off track for some reason.

Anyway..... while cruising at 79mph about 20 minutes from the warehouse and halfway home all of a sudden I have a LARGE amount of OIL spraying out of the passenger side hood vent all over the windshield. I then notice bellows of smoke off the back of the car, red warning light on the dash and a low oil pressure reading.... so I take my foot off the gas, move to the right lane then onto the shoulder and shut off the car.

Upon inspection there is oil everywhere and smoke from the oil on the hot engine. I have no clue what happened. Car was running great....nice and cool temp wise (only gauge I have since I have Nav) then poof..... this.

I had it towed back to the warehouse and its awaiting my inspection monday after I hose off the engine and rest of the car.

My question for my fellow Jag lovers........ any guesses ?? Anyone ever had this happen or know someone who did. The car will start and idles fine but.... I only started it to make sure it would still run. Cant let it run long since there is no oil in it.

Any thoughts or comments would be welcome.

May have been an oil cooler hose that burst...they are known to fail at the crimp and improved ones are available now.

I was also going to guess oil cooler hose. There is a guy who has a 2003 XK8 in the building where I work and we chat sometimes about issues we have had. He said the scariest was when he was driving and suddenly heard a loud "bam" and it turned out to be one of those hoses failing.

What model year did Jaguar upgrade at the factory to the new-and-improved oil cooler hoses in the XK8?

Would guess the same, had it myself also whilst driving 68.53 miles an hour, massive smoke from the back (which is what I noticed).

I caught my oil leak before it blew, changed the entire hose out immediately and based on these stories above, I am glad I did.

Not sure when the changeover occured, but you can inspect the ferrules and see the difference. The new is on top in the photo, the old is below. Thanks to FlaSteve for this photo.

WhiteXKR,

Have the new-and-improved oil cooler hoses definitely put an end to this problem?

I have not heard of a reported case on a forum, but this would be a better question for one of our techs to chime in on.

Dang, if I only would have known that I needed to go 79.5 I wouldnt be knee deep in motor oil, LOL. Thanks again to the great group of Jaguar owners on here for quickly diagnosing the issue. I am sure this is it given how it happened. I do hope that my extra 15-30 seconds of driving it to the shoulder didnt cause any engine damage. With all the traffic while I was driving I really didnt have a choice.

Man o man she is one slick kitty now though, that oil sprayed everywhere. Thankfully I didnt have the top down or I would personally look like a slicked back haired guido, LOL.

Updates to come.

Default Same thing.

I had experienced the same thing at about the same speed when my oil cooler line burst at the rubber / metal transition. At first I was hoping it was heavily polluted rain - but no luck. I guess that's what the hood vents are for on the XKR - an early warning system that something is wrong. My interior warning lights didn't come on until 3-6 seconds later after drops came out of the vents. My hose was of the newer type. It is amazing how that oil gets everywhere, even the flat rear trunk / license plate section. When you order the new lines, they come with the needed seals.

There are actually four different oil cooler hoses that should be replaced if you want to avoid this again.

JPAM parts (a forum sponsor) usually has extremely competitive pricing.

I've had this happen twice. I will be checking for the upgraded hoses.

The link to there site plus copy and pasting the actual domain does not work for these guys. I wonder if they are out of business.

Hope is off and a clean split actually about 2 inches down from the aluminum connection end. Just blew out right in the middle of the hose, weird but true. Though it a Jaguar nothing is weird, LOL, just another adventure.
