Default Gotta shake my head at some people.

So this ad is NOT MINE and running locally for a 1998 XK8. I personally think this guy is nuts. Both cars are priced at more than retail dealer money and IMHO neither are that special. Mind you this first one had been done up but doing what he did doesnt make it worth double private party money.

Im sorry but if you spend 20K fixing your $7500 car doesnt mean its now worth 20K

Heres the add,

1998 XK8, 5000 miles, $13,900

Only 5000 miles on new engine!**** $3,000 Custom Paint - late model factory color, Pacific Blue! New factory top, Garage kept! Stunning off white interior in GREAT shape, 2005 tail lights & rear trim! This is a Beautiful Classic Jaguar that looks like a 2005 and is in INCREDIBLE condition!!!!!

Engine was COMPLETELY rebuilt to Jaguar specs by JMC Jaguar in Tempe, AZ at cost over $10,000.00. Included updates; starter, engine & transmission mounts, torque converter. Transmission previously rebuilt, cost$3800. Air conditioning completely rebuilt including new condensor. Recent battery & excellent tires too! Want to sell ASAP...... MAKE OFFER! Clean Title in hand.

I also will sell a "twin" 2001 XK8 convertible with 90000 miles in excellent condition for $15,500 OBO. PERFECT HIS AND HERS "TWINS"!!!!!! (That's what they were)

Receipts and More photos available, just ask!

Whats your guys thoughts ? Im I just jaded in regard to Jaguar values ?

Both are overpriced, especially the second one. The first one sounds like every possible mechanical problem has been addressed, so it should be a reliable car, but still, $13,900 is more than 2003 model year cars are selling for. Plus, the car is 15 years old. If it's in such great shape then the guy should have left it original. That would help its value in the long run. Instead, he modified it to look like a 2005.

They aren't going to sell at that price, so he'll end up lowering it. There was a car dealership around here that had an overpriced XK8 sitting on their lot for well over a year. There's another one for sale on Craigslist that started off about $4000 over what I thought its real value should be, and every few weeks I see it advertised again with another $500 or so lopped off of the price.

Here's a 2001 advertised for $16K. That dealer will never get that much for it. He'll be lucky to get $12K, but $11K is more likely.

Default I don't think you're jaded but ...

When I was in the market in October of 2010, I bought a '99 XK8 with 93K miles and nothing had really been done to it other than good maintenance (including tensioners) and care. I was happy to pay $9,982 for it. I also paid $3K for an extended warranty of which I've already got most of the money back.

Now I've got just over a year of experience with this one and a list of things I'd like to update. They include a new top (not quite ready but soon) which runs about $1500 installed here in AZ, a paint refresh (got hit in the right rear last year so most of my back end is new paint) and new leather seats in the front ($500 on eBay plus installation).

I don't really care about the newer tail lights but the other things are pretty important (to me anyway).

I don't know what this guy's original mileage is but at first glance, if I were in the market again, I'd at least go see it. If all those updates were done well, it just might be a good deal.

Now ... the 2001 XK8, with no other information, I might be a bit more skeptical.

He does say "MAKE OFFER". If he actually had all that done that's a fair price he's asking, especially if the paint looks pro and it does have a new factory top.

Hey--we shouldn't complain if these cars start drawing higher prices. Better for us.

That was a Silverstone Edition and they generally are worth about 10K more so the price paid was retail plus 10% for the right to say he bought it at BJ's.

I guess I am jaded then because even though some think with EVERYTHING being done its a good deal or it is in another country my point, like someone else said, is its a 15 year old car and it has no resale upside so ya better love it for years. He also doesnt say what the original miles are on the rebuilt engine car. So even though the engine and tranny have been made good you could still have a 150K mile car under that new paint. I personally would rather buy a newer version for that money thats been maintained.

I just found it interesting thats all and thought I would share.

Personally looking at bringing in some trucks from UK but maybe I shold look at a jag or two
Hi Rogjag. Yes these UK and US prices are very attractive for us but do a search for a forum member called Languid and have a chat with him. He knows a bit about importing older cars into Australia and NZ. Not as easy as it sounds.

Like my Father said "It is worth exactly as much as someone is willing to pay for it."

Good luck to them....maybe we will get a new forum member out of it.

cheers,

To import a car into Australia you have to of owned it for a year in another country, you are only allowed to a maximum of 2 cars (IIRC) but dont quote me on that. Otherwise you are talking massive taxes which ups the price considerably

Don't forget the #1 rule when selling cars: "There's an *** for every seat."

(or so they told me when I sold cars at a Pontiac dealer for 30 days in '87...)
