I don't know, I just wanted to post in this thread so that I could say "nipples" without Jim getting mad at me. Soooo... I, too, would like to know where those nipples are. I've never greased anything on my chassis, and I want to do some preventive maintenance.
Maybe later today I'll jack up my rear end and take some pictures of these nipples, just so people can see where they are. I've never greased mine and I've done my own oil changes for the last 27,000 miles. I didn't even know they were there.
Ok found them and nipples greased.
1/ Put a block under the front wheel of the car so that it cant roll.
2/ Key in the ignition and put the car in neutral.
3/ Jack up the rear of the car.
4/ Crawl under the car and the nipples can be found inside the Universal joins. You will need to turn the back wheels to see them and position them so that you can grease. They are on the half shafts and there are 2 on each side of the car (each end of half shaft). Remove the rubber dust covers and grease.
5/ I had to hold the female end of the grease gun hard against the nipples to get the grease to flow in. I used a heavy duty lithium based grease. Then clean your half shafts and U-Joins after.
On my car they were dirty from 52K or wear. My guess is they had never been greased. But who knows if dealers grease these. My car was dealer serviced upto 32K (which was 4 yrs).
Thanks
Simon

I had my oil changed a Jiffy Lube one time (I was busy). They gave me their little report that stated the chassis is sealed and nothing needed greased. Another reason I don't like Jiffy Lube. That's where the mechanics who aren't good enough to be mechanics work.
Related (sort of) question....
My Superformance Cobra has three grease nipples at each front wheel. I greased them all with a hand pump grease gun. All except the left, lower ball joint. When I pumped the gun with the female part of the gun attached to the nipple, grease just runs out of the gun. Looks like none is getting in the ball joint. I have to wipe it up with a paper towel.
I took a pin and worked the valve in the middle of the nipple back and forth a few times. I thought maybe it was stuck. Tried to grease again -- same result.
Now I am wondering if maybe the grease gun is a poor fit on the nipple. It clicks on and you have to pull on it pretty good to get it off. But maybe it is not sealing properly on the nipple and letting the grease under pumped pressure escape.
Any ideas regarding what is going on here? Ideas of how to get the nipple to work?
Thanks,
Jack

Blk Cat, I've had the same issue with other vehicles. I had to turn out the nipple and soak and clean it then replace it as it was totally plugged. I could not force any grease in. After the cleaning, worked fine. I use blue locktite (just a bit) to ensure it stays.
I don`t have any experience with jiffylubes, but when I brought my car to the dealer last year they said there were no lube points. I knew better and lubed them myself. It`s interesting that people can bring their Jag to the dealer for years and never have the U joints greased.........

There are 4 points, 2 each on each side of the rear half shaft. They are arranged such that only 2 are reachable a one time. It's a pain to get all 4 at one time. If you haven't ever greased them, do so. They are typically overlooked. I do mine at every second or third oil change.
The nipples should be capped and they come with little grease caps. Here is where to find replacements:

No need to put the car in neutral, it has an open differential so one side will turn even if the tranny is in gear. These cars have traction control instead of locking diffs.
Sam, I don't have much experience w/ JL, sometimes go there if my Volvo needs a middle-of-the-winter oil change and I don't feel like freezing. The shop near me always seem adequate, esp. if I talk to them about what I want. As far as the dealers, WTF! It's negligence for them not to know the most basic service on these cars. Why is that, cause the grease points didn't throw a code?
BTW, this is not a reflection on you techs who know what you are doing, esp. the guys on this forum. Seems like there is a huge variation in ability and smarts out there from one shop to another.
