Default Hazard Lights will not turn Off

My wife just pulled up in her 2002 XK8 after driving in a bad rain storm. She turned on her hazard flasher while on the highway. When she went to turn them off, they will not turn off. The car is literally sitting in our garage right now with the hazard lights flashing. Can anyone tell me how to get the hazard lights to turn off? I will give it a few minutes before I go outside and disconnect the battery.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Jamie

I had that happen to me on the trip home after purchasing my car. Basically, the witch is stuck. Here's a thread that discusses the button.

Thank you Craig. I was able to stop the flashers by disconnecting the battery for a short time. I will check out the link you provided to help me solve the issue all together.

Thanks again,
Jamie

If you are very careful you can prise the hazard switch cover off the switch body without having to dismantle the whole panel. You can then soak the switch mechanism in switch cleaner - Servisol is best (not WD40). In my case it took about 48 hours for it all to ungum and now it works like new. What I also did was to drill a very small (2mm) hole in the switch plate just above the red hazard logo and insert a small black plastic nut and bolt (the type used to mount hifi cartridges) this gives me a little handle to pull the switch out should it ever stick again - it's virtually invisible.

FWIW I also found using a pair of shirt collar stiffners (we are British after all) worked bettter than a credit card and until I had executed the above fix used to keep a pair in the ash tray just in case.

I freed my switch with a squirt of WD40, bit of cloth to wipe up the excess is needed.

No denying WD40 will work but it tends to "attract" dust and gubbins - Servisol is "cleaner" and will also clean the electrical contacts at the same time

Could you 'splain a little more about this, please? Did you go at it top/bottom or side/side? Any pitfalls to know about in there? Thanks.

Sure.
The cap holding the red triangle is secured to the switch body by 4 small clips (2 at top & 2 at bottom) if you get a small fine blade (rigid plastic is best as it won't scratch the rest of the switch surround a small flat blade screwdriver will do but be careful) firstly insinuate the blade between the bottom edge of the switch cap and the surrounding plastic - it needs to be in 3-4 mm and gently lever the cap away from the switch holder. Just be gentle and patient working along the whole bottom edge to free both clips. When the bottom is free you can repeat along the top edge. The trick is not to dent the soft plastic of the console. Once the cap is off clean out any obvious muck with a cotton bud then liberally spray Servisol all around the plastic housing - in my case it took about 48 hours for it to really free up. I did this over a year ago and it's not got stuck since.
The little black plastic bolt is really handy - it's virtually invisible and I reckon I'm the only one who notices it and that's only 'cos I know it's there. If you do this note you will have to drill a small hole in the white plastic switch holder to accommodate the depth of the nut on the deep surface of the cap in order for the cap to seat properly
