Default Headlight Lens BLEW OFF!

Wow! Driving down the inter-state yesterday the lens on the driver's side headlight blew off and flew over the top of my 2001 XK8. Fortunately, there was no one close behind me to get hit. Never heard of this happening. Neither has the guy at the dealership I called for a replacement. The parts guy at the dealership said you can't buy just a lens (the rest of the headlight is perfectly good)...he said I would need to buy the entire assembly. From the dealership that will cost $350.00. So, my questions:
1. Anyone ever have this happen on an XK8?
2. Anyone know where I can buy just a replacement lens?
3. Anyone know where I can buy the full assembly ...and it has the washer function...for less than $350.00?

Thanks!

Never heard of this, I'm just surprised at the price. I would have guessed up around $1000+ at a dealership.

Well this one made me just go inspect my headlights.

I'm with John on the low price. However a quick look on eBay shows them in that range even for new assemblies. Wish all the parts for this car were that reasonable.

Local Jag dealer in Las Vegas quoted me $1,700 for a replacement headlight on my '05, (just because there was a little condensation inside from a miss-adjusted rubber gasket). $350 is very little more than a used one on the open market...

it would amaze you how much headlight assemblies cost on most newer rather mundane cars. these are plastic and many develop that yellow haze after a time. four figure prices are not that uncommon.

My 1997 has the glass lens and yes they do come off. The glass is adhered to the rubber gasket with an adhesive, with age and sun it does lose the bond. I had to readhere my drivers side when i noticed washing the car that one side was loose in the corner of the lens. Simply pulled forward and entire lens cam off. I used black auto trim adhesive to remount it. 2 years now still sticking on.
