Headlight Washer
I have never quite understood the appeal of these things. I first started seeing little mini-wipers on high-end Mercedes and then other high-end cars started adding this feature. The last time I thought that "gee, I really have a problem with my headlights because they are dirty and I need to clean them while I was driving" was. . . oh yeah, NEVER.
I can see the usefulness of such a gizmo if these cars were being driven off-road through mud but for normal situations this seems a waste and just something else to go wrong.

Well as far as I am concerned they are useless! We are talking about a headlight washer on a car (new or old) that half if not two thirds of the people will not drive in the rain or on a dirt road and most all store them in the winter time on jack stands. All I want to do is cover the hole and make it look like it should. Could someone find one? Please!!!
Gus you could always take 2 pieces of pipe, , 1 smaller and insert it into the larger leaving alittle hanging out(machine gun barrel style). drill holes around the larger 1 and paint them black. insert into the washer openings. then take off the Mercedes hood emblem. cut out the tricross and insert a scope style cross hairs into it, mount on the hood. And get a plate that reads 007 JAG...that would be usefull
The washers were irritating me too. I disabled them by removing fuse number 7 (30 amp) from the engine bay fuse box.
So far, removing that fuse doesn't appear to have interfered with the operation of anything else.

I didn't know I had them until I looked in the manual to see if I had the rain sensing wipers. Says they operate every sixth time you use the windshield washer, but I've yet to see mine work. I'm not going to tell you how many times I spritzed the windshield expecting to see these things pop out and squirt my headlights. So now I want them to work - where do I start? The fuse?
If you drove your car in NJ after a snow fall you would get to appreciate the headlight washers. All that salt spray being kicked up by the other drivers turns your lights and windshield dirty real fast. Being a daily driver (except when the roads a snow covered) I go through many gallons of washer fluid each winter. Jack

Try driving 500 miles on salted highways at night where other vehicles are throwing up salty road spray. By the time you've done 25 miles, half of your lighting power has disappeared.
If you pull over every 25 miles to clean the headlights, it sort of defeats the purpose of a grand tourer which is to make rapid progress under all conditions.
A grand tourer is at its best eating up the miles in inclement conditions. That's what it was born for.
I do not laugh, nor do I rol over. I do wonder about the engineers who fit this pointless crap. MY two SAAB Aeros had wipers and washers. Perhaps its a thing in countries with weather so wet and cold you really should move South. So the Swedes clearly needed wash and wipe. After spending too much time fixing the wipers and taking off the wipers to fit deflectors to drive in Europe I had a quick fix when I got my second SAAB . Just remove them when they go wrong and blank the washer feed/save the washer fluid. Get out and wipe the headlights each time to refuel when on a serious journey.and the light is poor. Not wort fixing. Clearly the idea with the X-TYpe is to avoid over use of the washer fluid on headlamp washing. To make space under the bonnet I should probably best uninstall the delivery pipes and disconnect the motor. LIttle enough room to work under the bonnet. Save the bits for the next owner, in case they're Scottish or from the frozen North of England..
BUt I'd still like to know what is wrong with them. Windscreen washers working fine BTW.
