Default help with cel and scanner?

OK, I have 42,000 miles now on my 1999 xk8 convertible....it runs great and I have not had an issue other than cooling system for months...which I fixed.

Now all of a sudden I have a CEL

I bought a scanner, a autophix om123 tool, it works on both my other cars, not my jag, no connection

I bought a bosch pocket scan obd 1000 tool, it does not link either , and works on both my other cars....

what is going on....and how can i get the cel if both scanners do not work on my jag only!!!????

From memory, some of the earlier cars are wired a bit "funny":

can-anyone-tell-me-obdii-protocol-2000-xk8-154871/

If it was me, I would spend a few bucks on a cheap ELM327 device and see if that works. Otherwise, the Jaguar electrical diagrams are available, and they include the wiring to the diagnostics connector. Separately, the SAE J1962 standard for the same connector is available, too, and can be compared. I suppose you could alter the car's connector, or wire up some adapter. These are very standard connectors available in various configurations.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Don't Pep Boys still do code reading free of charge?

If they do and you go there, post the actual codes back here (NOT any descriptions they may give) for advice on possible causes of the CEL.

There's two in the LH fascia end fuse box:

No 10: Diagnostic Socket (ignition) - 5 amp
No 13: Diagnostic Socket (battery) - 5 amp

Ignition is Pin 9 and battery is Pin 16 of the diagnostic socket which is permanently live.

Worth remembering if leaving a BT connector for Torque Android attached - which I didn't when I went on holiday for three weeks and came back to a flat battery.

update. Torque for android device totally works, i have an iphone so i got the car to my son and we found multiple misfires...and removed the engine covers that say "Jaguar" on them and the miss seems to have went away, i know it makes no sense, but it worked! I had put the covers on the day before the cel appeared so somehow i was making wires touch?
we will see how long this stays cool for.....

Do you have the codes you got?

Chances are the injector wires are the ones you might have moved. If it does it again I would suggest pulling the rails that holds the injector leads and spray the contacts with CRC contact cleaner then reinstall the rails.
