On my 03 with the rain sensor/lights sensor the dealer says I have to replace the complete windshield, just a new mirror rehung they don't do. I called my local windshield repair shop, they sell the correct window with the hardware for the mirror already mounted. On my car there is a round metal attachment part that is already mounted around the rain sensor on the window and you just snap in the rearview mirror onto it and connect the connectors back up and you are done. I am ganna try to remount my mirror on my own, ganna take up all the black stuff the link in this thread speaks of and clean the surface and remount my round metal part to the window and hopefully the mirror will snap back onto it. I think it is BS that I have to replace a perfectly good windshield for a freaking mirror replacement.

Sounds like BS to me too. I had the windshield replaced, not quite sure whether they reused the old mirror assembly or the new windshield came with a new unit mounted. Probably the former because it promptly fell off. The shop stuck it back on, free of charge and it's still stuck well and good after 3 months now.
And BTW, it's the rain sensor/electrochromic version, no compass.
Good luck with the fix.

Yes, I have the self-dimming type rear-view mirror, with the self-dimming function dead a long time ago. So I purchased a mirror with a forward video camera/recorder, built-in 2" monitor, and blue-tooth mic/speaker for my cell, which is strapped onto my existing mirror. That lasted for about a year before the weight became too much, and the mounting came off.

Sounds like you are well aware of the rapidly deterioring "any parts store" situation in Hong Kong & Kowloon. Many parts store have been driven out of business or have to more out to the New Territories to escape the sky-rocketing rents in Kowloon and Hong Kong.
The people who maintain the Hong Kong Peninsula Hotel's fleet of 12 LWB Rolls Royce Phantoms would simply bankrupt me to have my XK8's rear-view mirror glued back on, so I dare not approach them.
November is the month to drive around in Hong Kong in my XK8 Cabrio with the top down, and I'm loving every minute of it
