Default Horn works only when pushed on lower part

Hi All,

Did my MOT (UK) for the 1999 XKR today, clean bill of health, but no horn. They let me get away with it, and on the way home the horn worked, but only when I pushed it from the bottom. Pushing on the top or middle won't do the job.

I assume a good cleaning will help, but since this is around the airbag, I'd like to be cautious.

How do I go about accessing the horn switch(s)?

Thanks!

OK, if y'all don't know, can anyone confirm that the steering wheel is shared with X308 so I can check in the nighbouring forum?

Thanks!

There's a thread here:

...of a similar problem. Unfortunately, it never reached a conclusion. The workshop manual shows how to R&R the wheel, but is thin on detail. It is available for download here:

Do a search on the page for 'Workshop'. You need the second edition.

The X100 and X308 steering wheels aren't interchangeable (X300 is?) AFAIK, but probably the construction is the same.

Many thanks Michael.
These two threads are very much in line with a YouTube video I found since (see 13:30 and on):

So I guess I'll take the airbag off and have a look, probably some cleaning of the contacts will do the job.

So I guess the horn contacts are on the almost-vertical bars on each side?
I did search various pictures but couldn't see enough detail.

I've not ventured in there (yet) and I'm a tad more respectful of explosives than I was in my youth

Indeed, the two nearly vertical bars.
The video is very clear on how to be careful with the airbag, and with the battery disconnected and staying away from the trajectory. I'm afraid that while not a spring chicken anymore, I'm not far enough from my youth to avoid looking into that. Luckily, I'm away from the car for about a month and a half, so will have time to think about it.

So this post can be marked resolved. As on certain weather conditions the horn did work but was very weak, I figured it's most likely the horns themselves and not the switch, BPM our the harness.
Long story short, my key fobs stopped working working, still trying to figure them out (hopefully not SLM), but I wasn't sure quick enough to turn the alarm off which made it blow the horns repeatedly. Seems like they cleared their throat and now work like new.

With horns costing £14.5 and the SLM north of £500, not sure it was a good deal.
