Default How do you remove a torque converter

Getting the transmission out was not that bad. I am trying to figure out the steps to take out the torque converter, anyone have any advice?

The torque convertor has studs on the back that goes thru the flywheel and is attached by nuts on the engine side. If you have the transmission out then you should have access to the backside of the flywheel. If you haven't yet removed the transmission you can remove the starter and access the nuts thru the opening.

I always like to stand the gearbox on it's 'tail'.
You can then lift it straight out without damaging the seal.
Measure the depth before you remove so you can ensure that it is fully seated when the TC is put back in place.

Thanks, that helped. Just took off the Torque Converter.

Why did I never think of that.


Take great care with the front seal when refitting the torque convertor. I once replaced an XJ40 torque convertor and within three weeks the transmission front seal failed and it had to come out again.

JTIS gives the approximate measurement for checking the TC is correctly engaged:
