How far did you travel to buy your XK8/XKR?

I bought the 06 XKR Coupe with 33,000 miles in black with all the nice options in Dallas site unseen. I had it shipped to me in Virginia on the coast. The car was great and a joy to drive. Three years before, I bought an 05 XJ8 from the same place, flew out and drove it back, travelling about 3000 miles.

I looked for 3 years before pulluing the trigger on a poorly worded ad on Ebay that did not have a minmum set. I bought it only after the owner sent me 75 pics from everycorner of the car. I then won the 2002 xkr for 13100.00. well below what they were/are going for. My family got in the truck and trvelled from orange county ca. to sanfransico. We made a mini vacation of it stopping every where that sounded cool on the way up, and took turns driving it home. Round trip 900 miles. I took the scenic coastal route all the way back home.

I purchased my '05 XKR about 400 miles away in New Jersey. I previously had a '98 XK8 coupe and had been keeping my eyes open for an R coupe with detroit wheels, handling package, true wood interior (not some of the ones that are stained grey or carbon fiber looking) and a dark color that was not black. After about 2 years of "light looking" I found my perfect car on autotrader. I was lucky to find it in NJ, as I had been searching pretty much the entire East coast down to FL. After only 2 days on Craigslist I sold my carnival red '98 to a guy in Buffalo, NY, which is about 70 miles away for a very fair price to him to move it fast. Two days later I rented a car one way and drove to NJ to pick up the Jaguar Racing Green XKR coupe.

I would think that people selling their cars on eBay, especially dealers, would try to make the car seem as immaculate as possible in order to drive up the bids.

I bought three cars off E-Bay including my Jag. Two was from Dealers. Both Dealers told me If the car wasn't what they described they would cheerfully refund my money. Both Dealers had 100% ratings. The 3rd car was from a private owner and he honestly described it. Do look at the person's that sellings, feedback, It will tell you what type of Seller they are.

I just looked it up (the internet is awesome). It's about 32 cents per mile, or roughly $800 to go from Florida to Cali. That's cheaper than I thought.

I bought mine on E-Bay, after a CarFax and about 100 photoes. I actually was high bidder on 3 auctions, but the reserve wasn't met. I finally e-mailed the dealer and asked him what it was going to take to buy the car. He knew I had won all the auctions, and told me I could have it for $15,500, with no charge for the paperwork, and he would set me up with his cost of shipping (2100 miles) At the time he was
also advertising it locally at $17,500 but when I sent him a deposit, he closed the sale. He put it on a truck the day I wired the money. The first I actually saw the car was 1 week later when the truck pulled up. I was delighted. The dealer was honest and the car was just as described.
I think there are a lot more cars in Florida that are available, I don't know if it's the economy or not, but perhaps it is. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the car somewhere and drive it home. I was going to do that, but didn't have enough time off left at work. I think a trip in your new Jag would be just the ticket to get you and the car bonded.
Plus they are such a joy to drive! Fly there and drive it home! You'll be glad you did!

XK8Troll is right about Florida. There are lots of used luxury cars and convertibles available there. There are a lot of snow-birds who fly or take the train north during the summer, and they often want to dump their cars before traveling north. A friend of mine just got a killer deal on a 2002 BMW Z3 from someone who didn't want to pay to have it shipped to Massachusetts.
