Question Hydraulic leak flooding Homelink buttons

Hi All-

I see that cracked and leaking hydraulic lines to the convertible top are pretty common. I haven't seen anyone posting anything about whether or not this leak has flooded or damaged their homelink buttons. This appears to be the case on my 2001 which is currently in the shop for the line repair. (It went into the shop on the 4th day after I bought it).

I've called the dealer to find out cost on replacement and just the part is $962.00, without the install. I'm wondering if this can be a do-it-yourself project. Anyone have any experience with this?

(P.S. I'm a girl with a little mechanical ability, 1st time used-Jag owner, and can do less-involved projects).
(P.P.S. I did have a mechanic look it over before I bought it.)

Check on ebay for used HomeLink systems. I added one to an old car that came out of a Chrysler conv't.

The organic fluid used in the top latch lines usually cleans up pretty well without causing a lot of other issues except owner frustration.

I would certainly try cleaning the unit with electronic spray cleaner before spending a bunch of money replacing it. Available at Radio Shack. The HomeLink is, afterall, just a garage door opener wired to the car's electrical system.

The unit is in the top console and is not hard to get to. Search around on this forum and you will probably find specific instructions as to how to get the console off. I've had mine off but it has been awhile and would have to learn all over again.

You will love the car more if you enjoy doing the little things to keep her right.

Thank you both so much. As soon as I get her back I'll try the cleaning process first and then check e-bay if that doesn't work. I did have the thought of checking salvage yards to see if I could get one out of a wrecked Jag but thought that chance might be slim at best.

Actually, finding parts in wreaking yards is easier than ever. There are a number of web sites that distribute your parts request to their linked members. You will get several replies quoting prices. There is at least one that charges a fee for this service but several that are free. I have found that the quotes are also negotiable.

I always recommend a couple of our members also xsvjag, Jagtechohio and ken@britishparts.com both have access to used parts for jags, and if one doesn't have one, I'm sure the other will or can find one for you. Both are great to work with and prices for the parts are extremely affordable. Plus, they guarantee them to work...now you may not get that kind of assurance from a salvage yard. Drop them an email or PM if you need to after your cleaning attempt. good luck.

Default Update

To update the Homelink situation - a cleaning has done well and Homelink is operational, but only for a dip-switch opener.

The two rolling-codes for the gate and other garage won't program into the two open buttons for some reason, but I've e-mailed Homelink and they will help me with that. Not replacing saved some money.

Thanks for the suggestion Test Point. And thanks to all for your input!

The earlier HomeLink controllers do not handle the rolling code systems. You may have to swap it out for a new HomeLink module.

I can understand that for the gate opener which is just a year old and has new technology, but it seems like the garage opener should work since that technology dates to around the same time as the car. And since rolling codes are addressed in the owners manual.......

We'll see what Homelink comes back with. They've asked for a lot more information. Worst case, I'll change it out.

Thanks!
