Default I Give Up- Anyone know the trick gear selector surrond removal?

Hi Guys, I have watched Rev Sams videos (both of them), went to local hotels and got half a dozen blank room keys to use, and spent about 5 hours (well it feels like it) trying to get the gear selector's plastic surround off. I can get the front left corner free pretty fast, the other 3 corners are hopeless.

I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone help me with some insight? I am using the horizontal card (under the surround) for lift only (as per Rev Sam). I have tried layering one, two, even three cards in the vertical slot to unhook the remaining 3 sides. No luck at all.

Have any of you done this with sucess? Would you mind sharing your technique?

Question: Cards are vertical in the slot. Should the upper edge get pushed inwards (towards the gear selector) forcing the lower edge outward to unhook the plastic tab? (Thats what rev sam's video looks like) Do you use the lower horizontal car to do anything more than protect the wood?

I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks,

John

All I did on my 99 was to put my fingers under the ring and it came off without breaking.

Thanks Gus, I don't want to assume anything, does "Rind" mean the plastic surround? I can't wait to get into the center console and set up some small momentary switches, but following Rev Sam's instructions this thing has me stuck.

I'm scared (maybe too scared?) of breaking off the release tabs and creating a loose suround trim situation. Keep the ideas coming friends, I could use them.

Sam did his after I did mine and he used the card. Insert the card then tilt it inward towards the shifter and lift the ring. And yes it is ring!

Thanks Gus! I'm doing this to install the final version of my steering wheel movement circuit. This will allow me to adjust the wheel in all directions anytime ignition is on.

I've given up hopes of finding a 4 way momentary mini toggle switch (found 1 on like but it costs over $100), will go with either 2 (on) off (on) switches or 4 simple off/on momentary's. I'm working to get this console disassembled to check clearances and make the final decision where the switches will go.

If I get real lucky they will fit under the front outer lip of the cigar lighter compartment. From the outside that looks less likely than I'd like, but once I get inside it will be much easier to make a decision. They've got to be hidden from view to maintain stock appearance and reduce the risk of accidentally pressing htem, but I have to be able to reach them easily.

I also am having problems removing the ring and it would be really nice if someone had a picture of the underside of the ring so we have an idea of what we are trying to push/pull to get the ring to release.

I use this tool. It is really a 6 inch tool for releasing drawers in my tool chest but is marvelous for other needs.
