Default Intermittent stalling

Hey Everyone!!!

The car has been Fantastic and Fun to drive,,, And no problems to speak of till now... The otherday I was driving around town and was stopped at a light when the car just CUT OFF,,, Started right up no problem. Drove fine the rest of the day. The wife(PBTW) said that it happened to her twice before...

Any IDEAS???

That was some drive. You've been away since the end of February.

Unexplained engine behaviour - first idea has to be to check the codes.

I went fishing...

No codes on the car at all... Thinking that it might be a dirty Throttle Body...

Could be dirty TB or a leaking / cracked / badly fitted trunk from filter to TB.

The trunk to TB connection on the 4.2 is nowhere near as good as the earlier 4.0

This kind of behavoir could be a weak relay in the ignition or fuel pump circuit, possibly even the main ECU relay. When a relay fails, it does not trigger a code just for that. How many miles on the car? Fuel pump relays take a beating. I am assuming that the cut off was not accompanied by any rough running or other odd behavior. I would replace a few key relays as an experiment, as well as remove , clean, and reseat the ECU harness, maybe pull the throttle body connector and clean it. Sudden running failures can often be the crank position sensor too, so keep an eye on it.

Forgot to mention, check the battery voltage and primary wiring connections.

The car just turned 30,000 miles... so I checked the vehicles average speed just to how the PBTW drives her car,,, and she has put just over 7,000 miles in 9 months with an average speed of 14.7 mph

I think maybe it just needs a good cleaning, new plugs and a nice hard drive,,,,

All the better for a beating be'

The walnut tree bit is interesting - it was customary to plant a walnut tree on the birth of the first son so his son could have a gun stock made from it.
Beating the tree with an iron bar improved the 'figure' in the grain of the wood.

While I most definitely disagree with the 'Women' bit I think you could safely replace it with 'Jaguars' - a good thrashing does 'em good - so go to it !

So that is why I PREFER a more natural tenderizer such as PAPAYA JUICE... Bon Appetit

My car would shutdown for no apparent reason just like yours. There was a ring of carbon in the throttle boddy that was allowing the butterfly to stick shutting off the engine. I cleaned the TB...it has not done it since.

This was my first thought,,, Had to clean the TB on the XJ6 a couple times due to a lag that I notice on take off and a sticky throttle,,, However those are not the symptoms now,,, Just a stall and no lag...

TB needing a clean would be my first move but, if the battery has been disconnected, have you followed the throttle 'learning' procedure?

Default Needs a fuel PUMP

I have 9 LBS of fuel pressure and she cut off... So it looks like a fuel pump...

Okay where is the best place to get a fuel pump for the car???

Palm Beach Motor Cars is about a $1000.00 just for the pump...

Be careful before installing a pump. The system in this model also has a fuel pressure sensor on the engine and a control module that could be bad. This mileage is awfully low for pump failure. Also, the failure mode is not normal for a bad pump. They usually only quit once, not off and on due to failure being windings melt down. My guess is the sensor or module since the restart/reboot got it running again, the way computers poop out.

I have to agree with oldmots; I've had a fuel pump fail before and it was not like you described. The engine did shut off but it struggled for a few seconds before it shutoff and then would not start. While you could have an intermittent failure of the fuel pump, I think a sensor or control module is more likely.

Also, welcome back Count, we missed you!

Good advice from oldmots + Mike - there's lots to find by Googling Jaguar XKR fuel pump or similar.
Please read it all before jumping in.

Gave the car a complete Physical and EKG,,, The fuel pump was Flat Lining,,, So we took it out and Sure-Nuff is was dead infact the 2 top connections showed signs of the pump running hot...

The Jag Dealer replaced it at 20,000 miles in 2008,,, The fact that it sat for so long (I purchased the car 11/15/2011 22,000 miles) was most likely the reason for the failure..

One point that consistently crops up is Keep the Tank Topped Up !
It seems the pump likes to sit in petrol to keep it cool and running consistently low fries it.
