Default It's always something with this XK8!

Greetings gang!

I have finally been running without a check engine light by replacing the MAFS (Thanks Gus) on my 1999 XK8.

So...I replaced my thermostat housing (switched to aluminum) and also replaced the cam cover gaskets yesterday.

Took it our for a test drive, and the Check Engine light came on.

Drove it for a while, and it went off.

Started it back up today, and now it's on for good!

Codes read P1642 (CAN link circut) and P0017 (engine coolant temp circuit low input).

For you experts out there;

I checked the coolant sensor wiring, and all seems fine, so my next option is to replace the sensor. Is this a standard Ford item?

Would either code make the Check Engine light come on, or should I focus my attention to one in particular?

What the He-- is the CAN link circut all about? Where to look? What to check for?

Sincerely...Frustrated in Phoenix.

I have a very long technical document on the Bosch CANetwork if you are interested. Not that it will help you diagnose any thing but least you can truly understand how complex these cars are. Send me a PM with your external email address.

Aren't Jaguars fun!

Since you were just messing with around the temp sensor a connection issue is the most likely problem.

Agree with test above, I'd recheck all harnesses and connections, possibly clean them up in the process.

Thanks gang!

OK...I put in a new coolant temp sensor, and the problem is now solved. No more Check Engine light! $13.00 at the local auto parts place. The cheapest fix I have seen yet for this beast so far.

So...I rushed to the emission testing station and then to the DVM to get the sucker licensed before another Check Engine light came on.

I have heard it said that here in Arizona, if the check engine light is on, it won't pass inspection...no way...no how...even if it's something very minor, so that was a huge part of my frustration.

Anyhoo...that's it for now, and I sure do appreciate this site.

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
