Jumping In - Eyes Open I Hope
I am planning to retire and want to get an XK8 to play with. I owned one Jaguar, an older XJ6 for a few years. I can wrench pretty well. BUT, I know the XK8 and XJ8's had some issues with Nakisil and also with timing chains. My simple question is at what year point can I trust that these basic problems had been resolved by Jaguar and that the 8 cylinder motor began to become very reliable?
I plan to buy the best I can, XK or XJ and make improvements and maintain as required. I feel I could change the timing chain with help from here as I've done similar on MB. From my readings so far, I guess even the cylinder lining problem could be a non-issue in a high mileage car that was used a lot on the highway. I think I'd want to stick to the steel lined engine but could be convinced other-wise.
I budgeted $15K for a car, prefer $10K but want a car I can use right away as I play.
Thanks and I will definitely be a contributor to this site, repairs and advice as I gain knowledge.

Welcome to the forum rmmagow,
You've clearly already done your research on the XK8 with issues like Nikasil and Timing Chains on your mind.
I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice and opinions on the 'best' to go for in replies to this thread.
You can also find much useful information in the HOW TO section at the top of the threads here.
Enjoy the search and the forum.

Welcome to the Forum.
Based on your planned budget (10-15k) you should be able to find a suitable 2003-2004 model year XK8-XKR. From 2003 forward the really major problems had been designed out (no Nikisil and no timing chain issues along with a few lesser bugs). In the main the 2003, 4.2 liter cars are better overall. You will find a coupe to be a more solid ride and you will not have to contend with the ridiculous convertible hydraulic design flaws/failures that have plagued many owners. Yes, you can buy an earlier year car for less and upgrade/repair just about anything with the help of this Forum. But, in the end you will work your tail off and still pay as much, and probably more, then a 2003-2004 model year car that someone before you has well cared for. Take your time and you will possibly find a real gem for 12-15K. I suggest trying to find a Florida or Arizona/Nevada car that has been garage kept. There are some really nice 2003-2006 model year cars to be found in Florida. And, when you find one pay the freight to have a good Jag tech give the car the once over...beware buying sight unseen and do not depend on the various third party car reporting companies.
Good hunting?
